Model Metrix: Filling the Void Between Spreadsheets and Corporate Performance Management Solutions

Corporate performance management (CPM) solutions like Adaptive Planning, Planful and Vena have transformed budgeting, planning and reporting for thousands of organizations.  Despite their capabilities, many finance professionals still rely on spreadsheets for more complex financial and operational modeling.  Spreadsheets offer a flexibility and creativity for modeling that most CPMs simply can’t match.

However, spreadsheets often hit limitations, and contribute to risk, when they are part of a larger process.  That’s one of the reasons Model Metrix was founded – to address the critical void that exists between spreadsheet modeling and CPM solutions.  We develop modeling solutions that leverage the capabilities of Quantrix Modeler, the world’s leading business and financial modeling platform.  These solutions are designed to function within, and integrate with, our clients’ existing technical ecosystem; namely, data warehouses, business intelligence tools, and CPM solutions. If those systems aren’t in place, we are able to cost-effectively architect and deploy end-to-end solutions.

At Model Metrix, we strive to simplify complex modeling processes and enable end users to intuitively address their high-value business challenges.

Here are examples of integrated solutions as well as standalone models that we’ve built:

Multi-national Company Planning and Reporting

Integrated business planning solution for a multinational organization that features the annual budget and long-term strategic plans. Models are seamlessly integrated with a data warehouse along with a business intelligence layer for data visualizations and reporting.  The modeling solution addresses all aspects of operations including production, capital expenditures, operating unit costs, product costing and overall financial strategies.  The solution is used to quantify various strategy options and support decisions based on sound data.

Alternative Energy Investment

Multi-dimensional model that analyzes several locations as opportunities to construct and operate an alternative energy solar facility.  Model inputs included location, electric generation revenue rates, TIFFs, tax credits, taxes and labor costs amongst other variables.

Based on potential energy gathering values, the model simulates potential facilities with variations on size, equipment needed, construction costs and operating parameters.  Once all locations/facilities were created, there were several financing options considered and the model presented the best economic choice.

Higher Education Cohort Planning

Waterfall models were commissioned to provide long range planning of a large national university.  The model considered cohorts of students, the timing of those students as they moved through the university as well as periods of non-university participation (national service requirements) and the distribution of schools/departments of study.   The model was used to plan expansions/contractions within a $1.3 billion operating budget with associated endowments.
